Green Lighting for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) is the most recent standard of the Green Building Initiative and is formally known as ANSI/GBI 01-2016: Green lighting, No. 1: Green lighting for Existing Buildings. The idea for an international standard on green lighting design and lighting retrofits originated in 2005 as the ANSI-ANSI-05 standard Green Lighting for Existing Buildings, an international consensus document. In 2007, ANSI/GBI 01-2010 Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings: Green Globes emerged as the first project to present a standardized approach to assessing a buildings green characteristics.

Green Building Initiative is currently developing the ANSI/GBI 01-2021: Green Globes Assessment Protocol for Design, New Construction, and Major Renovations standard, also known as Green Globes for New Construction (NC) 2021. The first version of Green Globes for New Construction will be available for testing in April 2020, and the first version of Green Globes for New Construction may be available by the end of 2020. The final version of Green Globes will be available by the end of 2022. This standard provides a common approach to the design, assessment, and verification of green new construction in the U.S. and Canada.
